Lauris Mason, author of the Bellows catalogue Raisonné, describes this image as Bellows' "euphoric tribute to the armistice" (p. 112)

In this, an unrecorded state, the darkened eye of the Red Cross nurse has been lightened and appears more as it does in the first state.
