Note: John Sigrist was a former captain and considered one of the greatest players Ohio State produced in its first 25 years playing football. He was fundamental to the first period of sustained success that Ohio State had enjoyed on the gridiron until he tragically died due to injuries sustained in a game in 1901. His death shocked the entire community and football came within a hair of being abandoned altogether.

Ms. Linny Frickman’s (the recently retired director and chief curator at Colorado State University’s Gregory Allicar Museum of Art. ) curated “Scrimmage: Football in American Art from the Civil War to the Present” which debuted at Colorado State University in 2015, and toured the following year to the University of Oregon, the college’s partner in developing the exhibition. After a trip to the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, it made its final stop in Canton.
Our drawing was loaned as a replacement to a work loaned from the Ohio State University Foundation which did not travel to the Figge or Canton.
